The project focused on the rehabilitation of two 10 m long DN 1800 mm (72 inch) concrete culvert cells located in the alpine resort town of Thredbo. The culvert had suffered severe deterioration, presenting a significant risk to vehicular traffic on the road above. To restore the asset to its former condition, the team addressed the client’s needs using steel reinforced SPR®RO technology, incorporating the Rotaloc® spirally wound system provided by RIB LOC®, to rehabilitate the culvert and ensure its long term structural stability.
Accessing the culvert was challenging due to the rocky creek terrain. At all times during the project, special care was also taken to protect the surrounding environment.
Platforms were installed at both ends of the culvert to allow operators to safely position themselves and all equipment. Given the severe deterioration of the culvert and the soil erosion surrounding the host pipe, the project team initially focused on repairing sections of host pipe that were extensively corroded and damaged.
The client engaged Interflow, SEKISUI Rib Loc Australia’s trusted Australian installation partner, to perform the lining works and deliver a structural solution designed to improve the culvert‘s hydraulic capacity and extend its lifespan for at least another 50 years.
Using the SPR®RO / Rotaloc® system, the culvert was able to be efficiently lined with a robust, corrosion resistant and smooth-bore fixed diameter liner. The annular space between the liner and host pipe was then grouted using a cementitious grout.
The SPR®RO / Rotaloc® 91-32ROS steel reinforced liner was selected for this culvert rehabilitation project due to its ability to meet the client’s rigorous structural requirements and, thanks to a small construction footprint, be successfully installed in challenging site conditions with minimal disruption to the environment.
Despite the challenging site conditions and the asset’s significant deterioration, the rehabilitation of the large diameter culvert was successfully completed, restoring its structural integrity. The renewed asset has secured the natural flow of water along the creek and will reliably serve road users and the local community well into the future.
