Project Description

A quad-barrel large-format ovoid culvert outside of Adelaide required urgent attention after two of the corrugated iron sections collapsed. The City of Onkaparinga Council engaged Interflow, SEKISUI Rib Loc Australia’s trusted Australian installation partner, to perform emergency relining works to avoid any further infrastructure damage and risk to people and the environment.

The Opportunity

The structural integrity of the culverts was of great concern following the asset’s failure. With operator safety being the highest priority, the decision was made to prohibit operator entry to the structures until the new lining was safely in place. This meant a creative solution was needed to perform all rehabilitation works from outside of the tunnels.

The Solution

The team identified SPR®RO technology, incorporating the Rotaloc® spirally wound system by RIB LOC®, as the best solution to our customer’s problem. A unique design variation enabled the winding machine to be fully controlled remotely from outside the pipe, eliminating the need for a hands-on operator next to the machine.

Creative solutions were also developed to overcome flotation challenges when grouting the voids between the circular liners and ovoid host pipes.

The Outcome

By challenging the conventional use of SPR®RO / Rotaloc® technology, a creative solution was developed and used to complete the first non-operator-entry application in South Australia.

With the new liners safely installed and secured, the rehabilitated culvert system can continue to aid the natural flow of water and the safe passage of traffic above for generations to come.
