After successful completion of the first SPR®ST / Ribsteel® contract in Abu Dhabi in December 1998, the next rehabilitation contract in Abu Dhabi’s sewer rehabilitation program, namely ADSS 190/5, was awarded. SPR®ST technology, incorporating the Ribsteel® spirally wound system by RIB LOC®, was again chosen.
The total scope of the project encompassed 4.7 km (2.9 miles) of gravity flow sewer pipelines in the following diameters: 0.9 km of DN 500 / 600 / 700 mm (0.5 miles of 20 / 24 / 28 inch), 1.1 km of DN 850 / 1000 / 1200 mm (0.7 miles of 34 / 40 / 48 inch) and 2.7 km of DN 1400 mm (1.7 miles of 56 inch).
The client insisted on a stringent stand-alone stiffness for liners with requirements of up to 7500 N/m/m, dependent upon the depth of the pipeline and measured deflection in the existing GRP pipe.
The liner installation commenced in late October 1999, starting with the DN 500 mm (20 inch) lines and progressing through to the DN 1400 mm (56 inch) lines.
This project displayed the wide range and adaptability of the SPR®ST / Ribsteel® system as well as SEKISUI Rib Loc Australia’s ability to tailor solutions for specific problems.
For the diameters up to DN 1000 mm (40 inch) the existing plastic profile designs were configured with stainless steel reinforcement to resist the highly saline groundwater present in the area.
For the DN 1200 mm (48 inch) and DN 1400 mm (56 inch) pipelines, a new profile was developed specifically to meet the high stiffness liner requirement of 7500 N/m/m.
Large diameter and very high stiffness liners were able to be produced with minimal site footprint and infrastructure.
Site works were completed at the end of June 2000, several months ahead of schedule.
