Project Description

New Delhi Municipal Corp. (NDMC) was searching for solutions to rehabilitate a brick barrel sewer line that was laid in 1942 in pre-independence British India. The area is inhabited by VIPs and government functionaries. The roads of KG MARG connecting with India gate and Connaught Place are some of the most important roads in New Delhi.

The Opportunity

The road at Firoz Shah Crossing was in danger of collapse as the soil beneath the road had washed away due to a broken sewer line. The pipe rehabilitation solution needed to overcome several complex site challenges, including extremely heavy traffic conditions and restrictions associated with the line being located in a VIP area, utility cables located within the sewer line and also heavy sewer flow.

The Solution

SPR®ST technology, incorporating the Ribsteel® spirally wound system by RIB LOC®, was identified as being the most suitable technology for this project. The key reasons were its ability to meet the challenging structural design specifications, ability to increase overall hydraulic capacity, small construction footprint and fast site mobilization and demobilization times. Furthermore, the entire installation process can be performed in live flow conditions, typically without bypassing.

The client’s commitment to use an environmentally responsible solution was met as SPR®ST / Ribsteel® liners are mechanically installed, thus eliminating contamination risks to surrounding areas.

The Outcome

Ashwath Infratech was awarded this emergency project and were supported by SEKISUI Rib Loc Australia and its Asia distributor SEKISUI Singapore Pte Ltd.

The project was successfully completed within 2 days, despite the challenging conditions.

This was NDMC’s first experience with SPR®ST / Ribsteel® technology. NDMC’s Chief Engineer was thrilled with the outcome as no excavation was required on site and the sewer line was immediately functional.
